The San Diego neighborhood of Tierrasanta is located just off Interstate 15 and lies approximately 12 miles north of the city’s downtown area. The name Tierrasanta actually derives from the Spanish for “holy land,” reflecting the area’s gorgeous views.
Tierrasanta is bordered to the north by the large Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Its northeastern and eastern edges end at the large Mission Trails Regional Park, which includes Lake Murray. Tierrasanta is bothered to the south by large canyons that overlook the San Diego River and Mission Valley.
Residents fondly refer to Tierrasanta as “The Island in the Hills,” a nickname so popular that you can also find it on the welcome signs you drive past. Tierrasanta has a unique history. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, it belonged to the Mission San Diego de Alcalá ranch. However, in 1941, the US military bought the land as Camp Elliot, a Marine Corps training facility. After the Marines moved out in 1944, the property was transferred to the Navy and was deactivated in 1946.
In 1961, the US government sold the area which is now known as Tierrasanta as well as a part of the neighboring Mission Trails Regional Park to the city of San Diego. The town has been nearly built out since the early 1990s, and the total population in 2010 was 30,443. It’s interesting to note that Tierrasanta is among the first master-planned communities in San Diego. You may still see evidence of its history as a military training base, with rare, sccattered military debris such as ammunition.
Some of the amenities you will find in Tierrasanta include a branch library in the community, several baseball and soccer teams, and jogging and biking trails. Jazz and instrumental music are popular and band concerts is common. In addition, you will find a branch of San Diego Public Library, a research park, and three shopping centers. These amenities are popular among all residents in Tierrasanta, a community which predominantly features single-family homes, apartments, and condominiums.

Within the neighborhood, you will also find many top-ranked elementary and middle schools as well as schools run by the San Diego Unified School District, such as Juniper Serra High School. Community activities mainly focus on the Tierrasanta Recreation Center, which includes a large swimming pool, lighted sports fields, tennis courts, meeting rooms, and a gymnasium. There are also several green belts with a walking path that runs through the canyons; they are well-maintained courtesy of the Friends of the Tierrasanta Canyons.
