General Description
Beautiful community
Tucked into the hills near San Diego, Del Cerro is a wealthy residential community. It got its name—which is Spanish for “of the hills”—after the construction of its first homes in 1955. The town was first developed by Jackson Scott, who built homes on a flat stretch of land in the area. It was developed further as a residential suburb in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s.
Del Cerro borders the communities of College Area, the city of La Mesa, Grantville, San Carlos and Allied Gardens. The community is also adjacent to Lake Murray as well as the San Diego State University. Though it enjoys excellent year-round weather, one of the challenges of the community is that it’s prone to be affected by southern California wildfires.
Since Del Cerro is adjacent to Lake Murray as well as the Lake Murray Park, it offers residents easy access to a stunning natural spot that is a perfect place to relax and unwind, especially during the warm months. One of the most famous places for bicyclists and joggers is the path around Lake Murray Reservoir. Some of the activities that keep residents busy include seasonal events at Princess Del Cerro Park such as egg hunts, pumpkin patches and a winter wonderland.
Activities available for visitors and residents to enjoy include annual events like the Fourth of July pool party, which takes place at the private Del Cerro Park Pool, as well as the block party which features live music. The shopping needs of residents are met by various centers which you will find on the fringes of the town as well as within the community.
The commercial center of the community runs along Del Cerro Boulevard, whch a Chevron station and a mini-mart, a Mexican restaurant, a dental office, Windmill Farms, a fitness spa, and two liquor and deli stores.
The three schools that are physically located within Del Cerro are Lewis Middle School, Phoebe A. Hearst Elementary and Patrick Henry High School. Since Del Cerro is north of the USCD Child-Adolescent Psychiatry Hospital and adjacent to San Diego University, it’s an ideal location for individuals who are either employed by the hospital and school or those studying there.
More Features
The San Diego State University Master Plan has proposed to construct a housing project for faculty as well as staff in Del Cerro (specifically located at the site of Adobe Falls, a historic landmark), though the plan is yet to be approved because of environmental contestation.
Del Cerro is only a few minutes from Interstate 8, which links it with Downtown San Diego and other nearby communities. Del Cerro enjoys a close-knit feel which attracts families as well as young professionals, including second-generation residents. With its outdoor fun, pleasant temperatures, and bustling shopping, Del Cerro is an ideal home for many.
