General Description

Pretty Town in San Diego County

Nestled between National City and Chula Vista, Bonita is a census-designated place (CDP) in southern San Diego County. According to the 2010 census, the population of this close-knit community was 12,538.

The Kumeyaay people originally lived in this area near Sweetwater Valley; they named it Apusquel. After gaining independence from the Spanish Empire, the valley later became part of a land grant which was awarded to John (Don Juan) Foster.

The name “Bonita” comes from the Spanish feminine noun meaning “pretty.” This was the title of a lemon ranch which was owned in the late 1800s by Henry Ernest Cooper. There is a 5-mile portion of Sweetwater River in Bonita, and the town is also bordered to the north by the Sweetwater Reservoir, a body of water that was created just before the 20th century from the nearby Sweetwater Dam.

The pleasant climate in this community combines San Diego County’s coastal and inland valley temperatures. It’s warmer here than in areas that are directly adjacent to San Diego Bay or the coast, but it’s not as hot as communities in inland valleys like El Cajon or Spring Valley. The climate in Bonita during summer is temperate and peaceful, though the area sometimes faces flooding issues.

One of the most famous attractions in Bonita is the meandering walking trail that circles the Chula Vista Municipal Golf Course. It’s located within the central part of the neighborhood and is always dotted with residents running, biking or walking along the path. Because of the year-round warmth in Bonita, residents can easily enjoy the path in any season. In addition to the walking trail, there are also other parks that residents and visitors alike can enjoy: Sweetwater regional Park, Fred H. Rohr Park, and the Bonita Golf Course, to name a few.

The community holds a special event called Bonitafest in the fall, which features a street fair golf tournament, a parade and other festivities. Visitors and residents can learn about the history of the community by exploring the Bonita Historical Museum.

The Chula Vista Elementary School District oversees education for children in Bonita, and some of the other schools in the area include Sunnyside Elementary School, Ella B. Allen Elementary School and Valley Vista Elementary School. Junior high and high schools (all located in Chula Vista) are considered a part of the Sweetwater Union High School District. The Southwestern College, a two-year community college in Chula Vista, is also within a close range.

In the late 1900s, the Sweetwater Regional park was expanded and greatly improved, a development that further extended the number of walking and equestrian trails in the area and also introduced camping at Summit Meadow Road. The Bonita community has long been popular among equestrians, thanks to the many trails that lace through the Lower Sweetwater Valley. Some residents own horses and you can find them regularly riding the trails, all of which are well-monitored and maintained by the Bonita Valley Trails organization.

If you love warm weather and the outdoors, are looking for a cohesive small-town feeling of unity, or want to live near San Diego, Bonita is a great place to move to.
