Caramel Mountain Ranch—sometimes affectionately shortened to Caramel Mountain or CMR—is a northeastern suburb of San Diego. Bounded by the city of Poway to the east, Rancho Bernardo to the north, Sabre Springs to the south, and Rancho Peñasquitos to the west, Caramel Mountain is a true San Diego community in the heart of the region.
Interestingly, the name Carmel Mountain is actually a bit of a misnomer: the town actually sits in in the shadow of Black Mountain, and the real Carmel Mountain looms ten miles west of the Carmel Mountain Ranch neighborhood.
Caramel Mountain is all about local connection and events. Every year, the city’s Chamber of Commerce organizes a fall festival, allowing local businesses, school representatives and community organizations to set up information booths and communicate with attendees. The local middle school holds an “Olympics” competition that is popular among spectators. Special events and weddings take place in the Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club, which is also home to a golf course.
One of the most striking events in Carmel Mountain is “Holiday Magic,” an event held at the Fairway Village neighborhood division. Each year, the neighborhood decorates over 85 homes with elaborate lights that are kept in place from the 1st of December to 1st of January. Then, on the Saturday before Christmas, residents organize a block party which is open to the public. Visitors are free to walk through the neighborhood, enjoy hot drinks and snacks, and bask in the lights and festivities offered by several homes. This popular and unique event is considered a signature of Caramel Mountain, and has been featured in several San Diego Family magazine articles.
Carmel Mountain schools are run by Poway Unified School District. Some of the city’s schoools include Shoal Creek Elementary and Creekside Elementary, Meadowbrook Middle School in Poway, Bernardo Heights Middle School in Rancho Bernardo and Black Mountain Middle School in Rancho Penasquitos.
