Ocean Lover's Paradise
Encinitas is an ocean lover’s paradise! This large, suburban coastal community is located in Northern San Diego county, spanning six miles of the Pacific Ocean coastline. It is an incorporated city with a small-town beach vibe. The residents of Encinitas benefit from the proximity to the ocean and natural environment, but they also have the conveniences of excellent shopping and commerce. The scenic ocean landscape is comprised of coastal beaches, rolling hills, and steep mesa bluffs, giving the town a unique and expansive feel. The city was incorporated in 1986 and draws together the communities of New Encinitas, Old Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Leucadia, and Olivenhain.
Encinitas is a famed destination for surfers, with excellent beach breaks along its five-mile coast line. Popular beach sites include, Beacons, Moonlight and Swami’s. Encinitas has known to host semi-regular surf competitions. Whether you are a long boarder or short boarder, you will find a perfect break on the city’s coastline.
The Downtown area of Encinitas, which follows the 101, is a coastal shopping area that dates back over a century. It features historic architecture, artistic and family-run shops, sidewalk cafes, and restaurants—all framed by the beautiful flower arrangements that form part of Encinitas’s large floral industry.
In addition to the shimmering coastal beaches, bustling shopping and lively night life, Encinitas offers the San Elijo Lagoon Reserve, which is the largest coastal wetland in San Diego County, and is home to nearly 300 different bird species throughout the year. The natural beauty of the community is complemented by sunny temperatures between 40 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, making Encinitas a magical place to live. Just 25 miles north of Downtown San Diego, the population of Encitas was 60,000 at the 2000 Census. The city features excellent schools, with a District that began back in 1883 as a one-room schoolhouse and has since grown to comprise 9 elementary schools. Youth activities, including soccer and Little League, make the city popular for families.
