General Description
Quite suburb for a real home in San Diego County
Lemon Grove, California is an eastern enclave of San Diego located near the San Miguel Mountain. This quiet suburb is home to many families and is conveniently located for commutes to downtown San Diego or Chula Vista. Frequent fliers will also appreciate that the neighborhood is just 12 miles from the airport.
First settled and developed in the late 1800s, the area quickly became a popular location for farmers seeking a subtropical climate ideal for growing citrus. Although the area was once full of citrus groves, suburban homes slowly began to crowd out farmland, and by 1977 Lemon Grove was officially incorporated as a city. Today, the community’s diverse population hovers around 25,000. A slight majority of the residents are homeowners, and area rents remain affordable.
A handful of historically and architecturally significant Victorian and Tudor Revival homes still remain as a marker of an earlier time. Some rural lots can still support agricultural and equestrian pursuits. Although most residents use private vehicles to get around, there are also 2 Orange Line Trolley stops for those in need of rapid public transportation.
There is plenty to do around town, however, and residents are quick to support local small businesses. The Lemon Grove food scene features many mom & pop restaurants including popular favorites such as Lido’s Italian, Coop’s West Texas BBQ, and Charley’s Famous Hamburgers. Boutique shops offer everything from the latest fashions to antiques.
The city of Lemon Grove continues to experience economic growth and expansion. New additions to the area include the locally-owned 13 Points Brewing Company, a branch of the infamous Narumi Sushi, and a state-of-the-art studio for the transcenDANCE Youth Arts Project.
The Lemon Grove School District is home to a handful of elementary and middle schools, while area high school students attend campuses in nearby Spring Valley. Originally started by 11 local families in 1893, the district now serves over 4,000 students each year.
This family-friendly town offers plenty to enjoy after school as well. Families will enjoy community activities like the summer evening events at Berry Street Park, various local sports programs for both kids and adults, the Lemon Grove Day Camp, a variety of programs at the Lemon Grove Library, and the annual Community Bonfire.
Outdoor spaces include Berry Street Park, Lemon Grove Park, Monterey Heights Park, and Kunkel Park. Other community landmarks include the Secret Path of Lemon Grove, the Lemon Grove Community Garden, and the Lemon Grove Giant Lemon. The Giant Lemon was built in 1928 for the Fiesta de San Diego parade. Today it sits at the Corner of Broadway and Main St. as a fitting reminder of what once was.
As represented on the 3,000 pound statue, Lemon Grove also boasts the self-proclaimed title of “Best Climate on Earth”, and the idealistic Southern California weather offers residents year-round enjoyment of the area’s many outdoor events and amenities.
In addition to beautiful weather, residents enjoy a strong sense of community pride. Biking and walking are becoming increasingly popular ways to get around, and citizens are encouraged to engage in civic participation.
