General Description

A Popular City

Poway was an unincorporated community in San Diego County, California, until 1980 when it became a city. Poway is often regarded as “a city in the country” because it is in a country setting, while still offering residents all the conveniences and proximity to living in a major metropolitan area. With a population of 47,811 based on the 2010 Census, Poway is north of San Diego and south of Escondido. The nearby communities are:

  • Scripps Ranch
  • Rancho Bernardo
  • Ramona Sabre Springs
  • Rancho Peñasquitos

Several artifacts—spear points, pottery, arrowheads, metates (a small grinding stone), and larger grinding stones—were discovered along the bed of Poway Creek and prove the early Diegueno presence. This city’s history started in the late-18th century when missionaries from the Mission San Diego de Alcala kept their cattle in the valley. The community served as a stock range for local ranchos and a mission for about a century. It thrived on agriculture with several crops, such as peaches, pears, grapes, apricots, hay, and alfalfa, cultivated in the 19th century.

According to Outlook magazine, Poway is ranked the sixth-best city in California to establish a business, The community still maintains its business excellence, courtesy of its state-of-the-art Poway Business Park, which is a 700-acre complex.

Some of the top employers in Poway, based on its 2013 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, are General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Polerado Hospital, Geico Direct, HM Electronics, Poway Unified School District, Wal-Mart, and several others.

There are many outdoor areas to enjoy when visiting Poway:

  • Lake Poway
  • Aubrey Park
  • Old Poway Park (which is home to the Poway-Midland Railroad and Poway Historical and Memorial Society)
  • The Sycamore Canyon Preserve
  • The Blue Sky Ecological Reserve
  • Starridge Park
  • Goodan Ranch (over 10 miles of trails)

More Features

The city of Poway and nearby towns host several popular annual events, including its Fourth of July festivities, Christmas in the Park, Train Song Festival, and the Youth Fishing Derby. Apart from its recreational activities, residents also enjoy easy access to restaurants and other services at the Old Poway Village and Creekside Plaza. Even though most residents are fond of visiting the nearby shopping centers, all the necessary conveniences of a bigger metro area can be found in Poway.

Local education is provided through the Poway Unified School District that has 25 elementary schools, six middle schools and four high schools. The district has a record of high performance; for instance, in 2005, one of the local students became the National Spelling Bee Champion by spelling “appoggiatura.” The higher education needs of the city are provided by the Palomar Community College.

Although the real estate market in Poway is quite higher than many other locations within the San Diego area, there is still a chance for everyone, including first-time buyers interested in bigger and more beautiful homes, to secure their home. Poway is a family-oriented community with an outstanding school system that is perfect for families.
