Discover San Marcos
San Marcos is a beautiful and progressive city in the northern area of San Diego County, California. Based on the 2010 Census, the city had a population of 83,781 and temperatures rarely rose above 100°F in summer or below freezing in winter. The city is bordered by Escondido to the east, Carlsbad to the west, Encinitas to the southwest, and Vista to the northwest.
The public schools are in the San Marcos Unified School District—one of the largest school districts the County—with 11 elementary schools, three middle schools, and two high schools. The district also includes an independent study high school, a charter high school, and a continuing study high school. It serves over 17,000 students from parts of Vista, Escondido, Carlsbad and other areas within the region.
The city is also home to the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences, which is a physical and occupational therapy graduate-level school. The Palomar Community College has an enrollment of 30,000 and California State University–San Marcos has an estimated 9,000 students studying 44 different undergraduate programs.
San Marcos is undoubtedly a progressive community based on its educational institutions. Most of the residents are either students or individuals who are employed in education and related sectors.

For recreation, the city has golf courses like the St. Mark Golf Club. Visitors also enjoy the open space and recently constructed parks. To facilitate biking all throughout the town, miles of trails were constructed. Double Peak Park is among the popular destinations in the city as it features a panorama of the northern San Diego County from the county’s highest coastal peak.

A significant decades-old landmark in the city is an illuminated cross on a hill above Lake San Marcos. The cross is visible at night from several parts of the town. Another remarkable landmark is the Williams Barn or “Red Barn,” which is a community center as well as a reception hall built in 1952.
