General Description

Homeland of the Kumeyaay people

The area of present-day Santee was initially the homeland of the Kumeyaay people. The first inhabitants established the village of Sinyeweche on the banks of the San Diego River, where they had access to a water source. Interestingly, the name of the city derives from Milton Santee, a civil engineer and surveyor. His wife, Jennie Blodgett, was first married to George A. Cowles—another businessperson and pioneer rancher in the San Diego County area.

A suburban city in San Diego County, Santee is located about 18 miles from the Pacific Ocean (even though it’s part of the “East” Country region!). It’s linked to the coastline by a six-lane freeway known as State Route 52. Santee is a close-knit and safe community with one of the lowest crime rates in San Diego County.

There are several recreational attractions in the community. One of them is the Sportsplex USA Santee. This 15-acre sports field complex features three lighted softball fields, two lighted arena soccer fields, spectator seating, and a sports-themed restaurant that offers beer, wine and food to visitors. Santee residents enjoy watching a range of events at the Sportsplex; in fact, the 2012 and 2016 US Olympic Trials for the 50K racewalk were held in Santee.

In addition to being a famous location for mountain bikers, the city also hosts Santee Boulders, a popular Southern California rock climbing venue. Those interested in bird watching, picnicking, fishing and camping can use the Santee Lakes Regional Park and Campground. There’s also the Carlton Oaks Golf Course and Resort for all golf lovers.

During summer, residents and visitors enjoy a 10-week series of free concerts which is organized by the city’s Community Services Department. The Off-Broadway Live is a 100-seat cabaret-style theater in Santee that features year-round live theater.

You can also enjoy the Santee Wine and Bluegrass Festival, which takes place each fall at Town Center Community Park. The event is a fund-raiser for the local park and youth programs. San Diego Christian College, which offers 15 degree programs, was moved to Santee in early 2015. Elementary and secondary education in Santee is handled by two school districts: Grossmont Union High School District and the Santee School District.
