General Description

Nature and wildlife an excellent option in San Diego

University City is a beautiful community within the city of San Diego, located in the northwestern region close to the University of California, San Diego. The town is bordered by Miramar and Interstate 805 to the east, La Jolla and Interstate 5 to the west, and Highway 52 and North Clairemont to the south. This arrangement gives the community a unique triangular boundary.

Often referred to by residents as “UTC” (an acronym for the popular University Towne Center shopping mall), the city was initially meant to serve as a residential area for students and employees in San Diego—a place where janitors and college presidents would live together among gorgeous scenery.

Today, University City has five public schools:

  • John D. Spreckels Elementary School
  • Marie Curie Elementary School
  • Doyle Elementary School
  • University City High School (San Diego)
  • Standley Middle School

Two additional private schools in the community are La Jolla Country Day School (preschool – 12th grade) and Mission Bay Montessori Academy (preschool – 6th grade). Apart from the schools, residents who enjoy reading books and absorbing other media can make use of three popular libraries in the town.

A significant number of the residents of University City are connected with the University of California campus, including students, professors, and employees of the institution. The university also plays a vital role in the local economy, though the town has also transformed into an important corporate center in the San Diego region. This explains why many accounting, real estate, consulting, and legal services firms are moving their offices to the downtown, where they can stay close to their clients in the northern part of the community. Because the city is among the major economic centers in the region, thousands of workers commute downtown on a daily basis. Public transportation is provided by the SuperLoop rapid transit as well as a local bus service.

More Features

The shopping needs of residents are well handled by three local shopping centers, in addition to a large regional shopping mall – Westfield UTC. If you’re starting to wonder about the local places to relax and have fun, then you should know there’s a full range of recreational options available to you. University City has several recreation centers and community parks, in addition to multiple family-friendly gold courses. Check out some of these parks and recreation centers:

  • Rose Canyon Open Space Park
  • Tot Lot at University Village Park
  • Standley Recreational Center and Park
  • La Jolla Colony Park
  • Marcy park

University City is also home to Rose Canyon, which is full of flourishing wildlife. There are more than 99 species of birds here, including endangered species such as the California least tern and the California gnatcatcher. Another remarkable feature of the Rose Canyon is its unique vernal pools, found on the east end of the canyon, which hold incredible flora and fauna.

Whether you love nature and wildlife or are in search of a vibrant residential place to settle down in, University City offers an excellent San Diego option.
