General Description
The Crown City
Founded in the 1880s, Coronado—often known as “The Crown City”—is a resort city in San Diego County, California. It was incorporated in 1890 and has a population of 18,192 based on the 2010 census. Coronado is located on an island, which is connected to the mainland by a tombolo known as Silver Strand.
The first map of the island was created by Sebastian Vizcaino in 1602, who also gave the city its name. Coronado Beach is one of the most gorgeous in the country—it was ranked as the best beach in the U.S. by the Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research, Dr. Stephen Leatherman, in 2012. The name Coronado means “crowned one” in Spanish, and three different U.S. Navy ships have actually been named after the city.
Available data from the 2012 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report of the city shows that the top employers in Coronado include:
- Hotel del Coronado
- United States Navy
- City of Coronado
- Loew Coronado bay Resort
- Coronado Unified School district
- BAE Systems
- Coronado Island Marriott Resort
- Realty Executives Dillon
- Peohe’s
The city has excellent educational options: schools under the Coronado Unified School District include Coronado High School, Coronado Middle School (CMS), Village Elementary, and Silver Strand Elementary. There are also private schools in the community, including Christ Church Day School and Sacred Heart Parish School.
Tourism is one of the essential components of the Coronado economy. Three major resorts are located in the city—Loews Coronado Bay Resort, Hotel Del Coronado and Coronado Island Marriott—in addition to multiple other hotels and inns.
The famous Hotel Del Coronado, which was constructed back in 1888, has always been regarded as among the top resorts in the world. In fact, it was listed as a National Historic Landmark and has hosted several notable guests over the years: Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, Thomas Edison, Gerald Ford, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey and more.
Another crucial aspect of the local economy is the downtown district, which lies along Orange Avenue and boasts many restaurants, theaters and shops. Most of the restaurants in Coronado are highly rated and offer diverse cuisine choices to visitors and residents.
Coronado More Features
It might already be clear to you why Coronado is often described as the “jewel” of San Diego metro area. But this brief overview only begins to cover the city’s wide array of attractions.
Residents and visitors also enjoy spectacular beaches, hotels, events, and festivals, and they can explore the sites and the rich history of Coronado. There are many shops, both luxury and boutique, along with museums and art galleries.
Coronado combines a family-oriented community with a luxury feel. The town hosts several events such as its famous Fourth of July celebration, which includes a 15K run, an arts festival, fireworks over the bay, a swim and concerts.
Last but not least, the city is located on the water, and the majority of homes here have breathtaking water views. The community actually reflects the varied attributes of Coronado with its diverse architecture in mansions, bay-front condominiums and single-family homes. If you desire a calm and comfortable neighborhood when you’re set to settle down or retire, then you should certainly consider making Coronado your home.
