General Description

Come and see the beauty of Del Mar

The best way to discover the beauty and appeal of Del Mar is to see it in person—where you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean! The name Del Mar is actually a Spanish word for “by the sea,” reflecting the city’s location on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. According to U.S. census, Del Mar had a population of 4,161 in 2010 and an estimated population of 4,365 in 2016.

The climate in Del Mar is considered Mediterranean-subtropical with mild, humid winters and warm, dry summers. The temperature rarely exceeds 85°F (29 °C) or dips below 41 °F (5 °C). Del Mar is a small, close-knit town, containing two square miles of coastal land. It’s bounded by Solana Beach to the north, the City of San Diego to the south and east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

What really makes Del Mar one of the most popular areas in San Diego County? For starters, there are abundant beaches in Del Mar, and its location is convenient as well—it’s just a short drive from La Jolla and Sorrento Valley. Sorrento Valley is an area that is known for its biomedical industry and subsequent research centers. Another major attraction to Del Mar is the Del Mar racetrack, which has long held horse races during the summer and now features them in the fall as well. The Del Mar Fairgrounds are also the site of the Del Mar Fair during early summer.  When races are not going on, the fairgrounds host the satellite wagering facility “Surfside Race Place” through the year.

This historic town offers a variety of unique shops, excellent luxury and beach-style hotels, and renowned restaurants. Many offer spectacular views of the Del Mar coastline. In addition, there are restaurants where you can enjoy the best meals prepared with local ingredients as well as award-winning wine selection. Some of them include Arterra, Addison, and Jake’s Del Mar. The town has great spots to go shopping like the Del Mar Highlands Town Center and Village of Del Mar.

When you’re not in the mood for a restaurant, you can easily get fresh and fine produce at Del Mar’s Saturday farmers’ market. There, you can pick up the best seafood and flowers that the region has to offer.
