General Description

City of Beach Lovers

Imperial Beach is the ideal location for lovers of an active beach scene as well as individuals who desire a laid-back lifestyle. You’ll find this sunny community about five miles north of the Mexico border; it’s connected to Coronado by the Silver Strand. Imperial Beach is the southernmost beach city in Southern California, with a population of 26,324 people according to the 2010 census.

The residential beach city is part of the San Diego – Tijuana metropolitan area, which is the largest bi-national metropolitan area shared between Mexico and the United States. The city’s name was derived from Imperial County, California – a desert climate 160 km east. Its modern history dates back to the late 1880s, when farmers and landowners from the Imperial Valley moved to the area in search of cooler weather during summer months.

Major efforts have been made within the last ten years to make Imperial Beach a visitor-friendly and commercially thriving neighborhood. Imperial Beach officials began carrying out a community redevelopment plan in 2004 to improve the commercial corridor along Palm Avenue as well as Seacoast Drive.

The crime rate in this neighborhood is quite low. For instance, Imperial Beach was ranked below the national average by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department 2008 crime statistics.

Although there are a few hotels in the city, it remains a predominantly residential city. The homes in Imperial Beach are characterized by ocean views as well as close proximity to the beach. In fact, most of the homes in Imperial Beach are within walking distance to the coast and downtown Imperial Beach – the trademark of a classic beach community.

Imperial Beach residents have a wide range of options to choose from when it comes to outdoor and indoor fun. Residents and visitors enjoy beach sports, including volleyball, boarding, and surfing. Since the neighborhood is often seen as a surfing mecca, one of the most popular attractions you will find there is at Pier Plaza, where you can watch surfers in action or join in yourself. There are several surfboard benches with plaques lining the pier that symbolize the influence of Imperial Beach waves on the sport of surfing.

More Features

You can also find surfers at Boca Rio Break. A popular beach, the southernmost on the entire west coast of the country, is Border Field State Park. Beachgoers here sit across a line in the sand from those in Mexico. There’s also a classic car show on the beach as well as an Annual Dog Surfing Contest. Finally, Imperial Beach is home to a famous farmer’s market at Pier Plaza, one of the favorite destinations for tourists and residents.

Homes in the Imperial Beach community are largely classified as condominiums, single-family homes and two-four-unit structures – mostly designed as residential income properties.

For all of those who have always wanted to live in a beach town, Imperial Beach is an excellent option. It’s an ideal and affordable beach community that offers a simple, laid-back life.
