One of the best areas to own real estate along the San Diego coastline is in La Costa Carlsbad.

The La Costa real estate market has a wide range of housing, including condominiums, apartments and detached homes—many of which sit on large lots. The development of this thriving community dates back to 1965, when several thousands of acres of land were purchased and a major building effort began. A good portion of the land was also turned into a world-class golf course.

Rancho La Costa, which is commonly called La Costa Resort and Spa, was designed to support tourism and later acquired by Omni Hotels. It is now officially known as Omni La Costa Resort and Spa, although most residents still refer to it affectionately by its original name.

La Costa was initially a separate “town,” but was annexed, and later it became part of Carlsbad. In fact, La Costa gets its name from the golf and tennis resort itself, a destination that is central to the area.

The community is just 35 miles north of downtown San Diego along the Pacific Coast and also 90 miles south of Los Angeles. It is bounded by Alga Road, Olivenhain Road, Rancho Santa Fe Boulevard, and El Camino Real.

There are four different schools serving children from La Costa. Families from Rancho Santa Fe, Encinitas, and the southern area of Carlsbad are assigned to San Diego Academy and La Costa Canyon High School. Students living on the northern side of the golf course are assigned to San Marcos High School and San Elijo Middle School.

La Costa is famed as a playground for the wealthy, and there are many residents that retreat here from Hollywood. In fact, several celebrities either have homes along the golf course or rent property within La Costa Resort.

Many homes here provide panoramic views. Wide windows look out onto Batiquitos Lagoon, La Costa Resort, the Pacific Ocean, and backcountry hills. Beyond the architecture, easy access to the resorts as well as miles of beaches make this community a fantastic destination.

More Features

La Costa also has a range of culture offerings. Many argue that Bluefire Grill, located at the Omni La Costa Resort, is one of the best restaurants in town. However, other areas of Carlsbad—including the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort (initially called the Four Seasons) and The Village—provide residents with great backdrops for upscale dining.
