General Description
La Mesa: Jewel of the Hills
Known as the “Jewel of the Hills,” the community of La Mesa lies in the rolling hills of San Diego County. A drive through the city quickly reveals how fitting this nickname is: with a near-perfect climate, easy access to retail and commercial areas, tree-lined streets, and walkable neighborhoods, La Mesa is truly a hidden gem.
You’ll find the city about nine miles east of Downtown San Diego. It has a population of 57,065 people based on the 2010 census. In Spanish, the name La Mesa means “the plateau” or “the table” – a name that comes from the elevated geography.
Founded in 1869, La Mesa was incorporated on February 16, 1912, according to the general laws of the state of California. Although it doesn’t have a city charter, the city still operates under the laws of the state of California.
There is never a dull moment in the city; an array of events keep residents busy all through the year. La Mesa’s famed Oktoberfest is one of the biggest. This fun-packed festival takes place at the beginning of October each year, and is typically attended by about 200,000 visitors through its three-night span.
From June through August, residents enjoy a Back to the 50s Car Show. An annual summer event, held every Thursday evening from June to August, the show allows classic car enthusiasts to display their unique vehicles. It’s held in La Mesa Village along La Mesa Boulevard and is completely free for residents and visitors.
During June and July, residents enjoy the Sundays At Six, a free concert series that takes place annually. Free concerts are held in Harry Griffen Park from 6 pm to 7 pm for six Sundays. The free show, which was conceived by Mark Arapostathis (the then-city councilman), Yvonne Garrett (assistant city manager), and other members of the community, started back in 2002. Other events that residents look forward to include the Antique Street Fair and the Christmas in the Village.
Two districts oversee education in La Mesa. The Grossmont Union High School district oversees the Gateway Day School and Helix High School, while La Mesa-Spring Valley School District operates most elementary schools as well as middle schools within the city. Some of these elementary schools include:
