General Description

Leucadia: Isle of Paradise

Sit on a bluff overlooking the vast expanse of sparkling blue water below and you just might think you’re in Greece. Leucadia tends to have that transportive effect on people, dating all the way back to 1870, when English settlers chose the name that means, “Isle of Paradise” in Greek. Some of this idyllic coastal community’s streets—Daphne, Neptune, Phoebe and Hymettus—are also of Greek origin.

Located in North County within the city of Encinitas and bordering Carlsbad, Leucadia is an especially scenic, beachfront enclave about 25 miles north of San Diego. This rustic beach town overflows with surf-style appeal while embracing an upscale lifestyle with multi-million dollar houses overlooking the beach. Look closely and you may be able to find a quaint beach bungalow for considerably less; what it lacks in space and modern updates it may more than make up for in charm and access to some of the most beautiful beaches in southern California.

Grandview is one of the area’s more popular surfing spots, and Leucadia State Beach, also known by locals as Beacon’s, is also a haven for beachgoers looking to fish, swim, or enjoy a picnic on the sand. Art galleries and boutiques also dot the landscape, as well as a variety or restaurants ranging from local favorite Haggo’s Organic Taco, to Regal Seagull for craft beer and a menu featuring several gourmet sausages, to Le Papagayo, which serves Mediterranean and Latin American cuisine and offers live music every night.

You’ll find much of the town’s shopping, dining, and entertainment, as well as numerous conveniences such as the Leucadia post office, bike rentals, and yoga studios, along the main drag. Head into downtown Encinitas just down the street, where 50+ restaurants, abundant shopping, and movie theaters await, and don’t forget to set aside Sunday mornings for Leucadia’s farmer’s market.
