Mira Mesa is among the largest suburban cities in the northern side of San Diego County. The city is home to more than 80,000 people and sits about 18 miles north of downtown San Diego. Mira Mesa is bordered by Interstate-805 to the west, by Interstate-15 to the east, by the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar to the south and by Los Peñasquitos Canyon to the north. Interestingly, the US Army used the land around this community as a test area during World War II. Part of the surrounding land was also used by the US Navy as a landing strip called Hourglass Field.
Several years later after the Naval Air Station opened, Mira Mesa was developed into a residential community. The goal was to support the personnel that were stationed at the NAS Miramar, but the city has since experienced rapid growth and has expanded to create space for new residents. Its population has grown quickly in part because of employees moving to the area to work for the nearby University of California San Diego, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and biotech and pharmaceutical companies. Living in Mira Mesa is always fun—the city has sufficient space to give residents a sense of metropolitan vibrancy, while it is still small enough to provide a strong community feel. There are several annual events, including Halloween festivals, a Fourth of July parade, the Mira Mesa Street Fair, and more.
In addition, there are many activities for children, such as the Chargers Youth Football League and the Mira Mesa Girls Softball League. The Chargers Youth Football League educates children between 5 and 15 years old about the fundamentals of football as well as teamwork.
There is a large Filipino population in Mira Mesa, and you’ll find vibrant Filipino culture and dining in the city.
