General Description

Mix of rural living and modern convenience

If you are seeking space from the busy cities of Southern California, Ramona is an excellent choice. The town is a perfect mix of rural living and modern conveniences. The town has a folksy feel and inviting community. Its possible to find long standing rural estates on acres of land, to modern new construction homes. Whether its new or old you’re bound to find a picturesque landscape of boulder-speckled mountains and rolling plains.

There is a unique flavor to Ramona that’s hard to resist. It’s the reason so many San Diego homebuyers fall in love with this quaint inland city, located about 30 miles from the ocean. For this same reason so many generations of original settlers and inhabitants remain active members of the community and retain the traditions of the previous generations.

There are several special places worth visiting in Ramona. One of the best places to visit is the Amos Verlaque House, the first building in the city circa 1883. It still stands today, and now houses the Guy B. Woodward Museum. Another great find is The Wildlife Research Center. This non-profit organization has been instrumental in preserving thousands of acres of grasslands in the town, including one that shelters one of the few remaining burrowing owl populations in San Diego County. The Ramona Grasslands are also a nesting place for bald eagles and a feeding ground for snow geese and ferruginous hawks in the winter. You may also stumble upon the Oasis Camel Dairy, open for private tours (and camel rides!), plus sales of camel milk-based products like soaps, lotions, bath bombs, and chocolate.

Families appreciate the quality education that is offered in Ramona. It has five elementary schools, two middle schools, and three high schools of the Ramona School District. For college, students can travel easily to California State University-San Marcos, the University of California, San Diego State University and several community colleges that can be found in the county.

The favorable climate means outdoor recreation is a four-season pursuit as hikers, bikers, and horseback riders enjoy several miles of trails in the pristine wilderness areas. The Ramone Grassland Preserve is a popular spot featuring a 3.1-mile walking trail. There are also several parks in the area. A community favorite is Collier County Park along with Dos Picos County Park which features a playground, a tennis court and a basketball court plus a Boys and Girls Club with an indoor soccer arena. In addition, Dos Picos County Park has hiking trails and a fishing pond. This list could not be complete without mentioning Mount Woodson and Potato Chip Rock. These areas just represent a portion of what Ramona has to offer for outdoor recreation.

More Features

In 2006, the Ramona Valley was designated an American Viticultural Area. Presently, there are more than 30 wineries and tasting rooms serving award-winning wines as well as spirits, beer and cider. Several local restaurants offer authentic Italian and Mexican cuisine in a home style manner. You can also find antique shops and boutiques along Main Street.

Ramona is the ideal place for those who desire a location to retire, raise their family, or have a wonderful time enjoying the outdoors.
