General Description
The right community
East Village is well-known as one of the largest and most rapidly developing neighborhoods in San Diego. Development in the community has skyrocketed, mainly because of the building of PETCO Park—which happens to be the San Diego Padres’ very own state-of-the-art baseball Petco.
Located southeast of the Core district and Cortez Hill in downtown San Diego and east of the Gaslamp Quarter, East Village is the largest urban neighborhood in downtown San Diego. The area once consisted largely of warehouses and vacant lots. But, in the 1990s, it was transformed into a thriving hub for artists and social services.
Residential aspects of the town emerged in the wake of the 2004 establishment of Petco Park. The population of the neighborhood currently sits at about 10,000 and is growing quickly, with most residents moving into mid-rise or luxury condominiums and lofts. Some of the perks that have continuously attracted locals from neighboring downtown areas are the continuous urban development of the area as well as the steady growth of new businesses.
The community is now a cultural hotspot for drinking, eating, and entertainment, attracting visitors from around the San Diego area. Overnight and weekend trips are common, spawning a growing hotel industry. Some of the hotels you’ll find in the East Village include:
- The Andaz San Diego, featuring 159 luxury rooms and a rooftop bar, underground nightclub, wine bar, and upscale restaurant.
- The San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter, which offers 306 luxuriously-appointed guestrooms—a good number of which look directly into Petco Park.
- The Hilton San Diego Bayfront, featuring a sun-and-sea inspired design and exceptional panoramic views of the bay and downtown San Diego.
- The 235-room Hotel Solamar San Diego, a Kimpton lifestyle hotel
Shopping activities are provided by several boutiques, such as the Wild Dove Boutique, which is filled with affordable and high-quality women’s clothing. There are also locally-made, trendy, and creative menswear stores. Some of the additional businesses and landmarks you’ll find in East Village include:
