General Description
City of Choice
There are several reasons why more individuals and families than ever are choosing Escondido as their “City of Choice.” Located in a long valley in the coastal mountains of Southern California, the city lies about 18 miles inland, 100 miles south of Los Angeles, about 18 miles inland and 30 miles northeast of San Diego. Escondido is a gem of a city tucked into mountain landscaped—hence its name, which means “hidden” in Spanish—and it is surrounded by avocado and citrus groves. It remains one of the few communities where individuals of all income levels are free to enjoy the Southern California lifestyle. Escondido was incorporated in 1888 and is among the oldest cities in San Diego County with a population of 143,911 based on 2010 census.
Escondido is experiencing rapid growth among several communities such as Hidden Trails at the east end of East Valley Parkway. There are also other sparsely populated, unincorporated communities like:
- Felicita Park
- Jesmond Dene
- Rincon Del Diablo
- Hidden Meadows
As a result of its inland setting, Escondido is significantly warmer during summertime than other coastal cities such as Oceanside or Carlsbad and cooler during winter.
Some of the top employers in the city include;
- The Escondido Union School District
- Palomar Medical Center
- Escondido Union High School District
- The North County Transit District and
- The city of Escondido
Initially, the city of Escondido was settled as part of the Rancho Rincon del Diablo, a large Mexican land grant. However, a group of investors from Los Angeles in 1883 bought the rancho and began transforming it into a city. Although it was initially an agricultural community renowned for its oranges, walnuts, grapes, avocados, and lemons, its economy is presently more commercial and retail-based.
Education is Escondido is handled by three school districts. There are 19 elementary schools in Escondido, seven middle schools and seven high schools. Some of the schools include Orange Glen High School, Valley High School, Classical Academy High School and several others
Did you know that the 14th largest craft brewery in the country is headquartered in Escondido? The Stone Brewing Company is not just known for their popular beer; they are also very eco-friendly. The roof of the brewing company is covered with solar panels, lowering their energy cost and reduces their carbon footprint while they brew great beer.
Natural features
Escondido abounds with natural attractions. It is home to three lakes (Lake Hodges, Lake Dixon and Lake Wohlford), all popular sites for fishing, boating and swimming. There is truly never a dull moment in Escondido which has 15 parks. Some of these include:
- Kit Carson
- El Norte Park
- Daley Ranch
- Grape Day Park (which consists of the California Center for the Arts, a museum as well as a conference center)
- Mountain View and several others
The children are not left out; they can enjoy the Escondido Children’s Museum and Escondido Public Library.
Homes in Escondido offer the rich arts and culture of a metropolitan city alongside the close-knit feeling of living in a suburban area. While living in Escondido, you can enjoy a relaxed lifestyle while living close enough to San Diego to take trips to the city when you please.
