General Description

The Strand: Community in the Pacific

Mission Beach, also known as “the Strand,” is a thriving San Diego community constructed on a sandbar between Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The Strand spans about two miles of oceanfront. It’s bounded on the south by the San Diego River estuary, on the north by Pacific Beach, and on the east by Mission Bay Park. On the ocean and bay sides of the community, a boardwalk runs along the beaches and offers stunning coastal views

Mission Beach is divided into North Mission, South Mission, and a peninsula. A good number of residential structures in Mission Beach were actually constructed in the 1930s and 40s as summer cottages. In fact, some of these buildings were built as early as the 1920s; for instance, the rare airplane bungalow of Manhattan Court was erected in 1924. Some of the many fun activities you can enjoy in Mission Beach include:

  • Surfing
  • Skateboarding
  • Sunbathing
  • Frisbee tossing
  • Bicycling and several others

The water in Mission Beach is ideal for surfing, swimming and all kinds of water activities. A famed spot for divers can be found a half mile off the southern end of Mission Beach. This is the location where old shipwrecks were dropped into the water, resulting in artificial reefs in a bid to preserve sea life. Mission Beach is beloved by residents and tourists alike—in fact, of the challenges you may encounter in Mission Beach is finding parking on the narrow and densely inhabited residential streets. Here’s a tip, though: when parking, always remember to check the signs or the public lots around Santa Clara Point, Belmont Park, and South Mission Beach Park.

Trying to decide what to do or visit in Mission Beach? You’ll find lots of action around Belmont Park, where you can enjoy the roller coaster, play games, rent a bike, grab a bite, and enjoy other amusement rides. There are also fantastic fishing spots at the end of the road at South Mission Beach Park.

Residents enjoy the free weekend performance of a local skating club, “Skate This,” where can they enjoy trick skating and dancing on traditional skates as well as rollerblades. The community is also a popular location for engaging in sports, including basketball and volleyball, since many courts are available. Most bars you will find in Mission Beach are relaxed, beach-style gathering locations, and the community is famous for its nightlife options. Some of the popular venues are:

  • The Sandbar Sports Grill
  • The Pennant in South Mission
  • Guava Beach
  • Wave House
  • The Coaster Saloon Draft

You will undoubtedly enjoy the fun and laid-back way of life in Mission Beach—this town is indeed a beach town in every sense of the term. This community is famed for its simplicity as well as its friendly atmosphere; one thing that is common among the residents of Mission Beach is their desire to live a beach lifestyle. Most of the residents in Mission Beach are a diverse group of free-spirited artists, sports enthusiasts, middle-aged professionals, writers, and families who yearn to feel younger. If you’re planning a visit to Mission Beach, make sure to explore the peninsula, and you’ll discover that it is one of the best places not just for a weekend trip but also to spend the rest of your life in.
