General Description
Where Califormia Began
Often described as the place “where California began,” Point Loma is a seaside community within the city of San Diego, California. This hilly peninsula is bordered by the San Diego River to the north, the San Diego Bay and Old Town to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Point Loma is a destination of historical significance: it was the landing place of the first European expedition to come ashore modern-day California. Point Loma’s history is still visible in its landscapes and monuments; it’s home to the Cabrillo National Monument, which commemorates the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. He sailed his ship (the San Salvador) to San Diego in 1542 and became the first European to explore California.
Based on the 2010 census figures, Point Loma has an estimated population of 47,981, including Ocean Beach. The community is home to two major military bases, a national monument, a university, and commercial and residential areas. It is also the site of the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, which is a solemn memorial to respect and reflect on the individuals who have served our country.
The community’s original name was La Punta de la Loma de San Diego, which translates to the Hill Point of San Diego (“loma” is Spanish for “hill”). The name was later anglicized to Point Loma. Due to the lack of available fresh water, there were no permanent indigenous settlements in Point Loma; however, the Kumeyaay people periodically visited Ocean Beach to harvest clams, lobsters, mussels, and abalone.
The best landmark in Point Loma is the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, a distinctive icon that is sometimes used to represent all of San Diego. The Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The community’s economic engines are neighborhood-serving retail, military facilities, and marine recreation, especially deep-sea fishing and yachting. Since there are many military installations located in the peninsula, a good number of its residents are members of the military or civilian military employees.
Point Loma’s hilly landscape is packed with fun activities to entertain residents and visitors. Annual special events include:
- The Day at the Docks festival in April
- The Carillo festival in October
- The Festa do Espirito Santo and other holiday festivals
More Features
The community features many commercial amenities, too. Look for the Liberty Station in the redeveloped Naval Training Center—it’s a waterfront urban village full of breweries, hotels, and restaurants, as well as the famous Liberty Public Market. The market offers stalls filled with wine, crafts, foods, pastries, and beer. In fact, there are more than 48 galleries, art and design studios, and museums in Liberty Station, along with various organizations showcasing San Diego’s creative community.
Education in the community is managed by schools in the San Diego Unified School District, which includes seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and Point Loma High School. There are also two middle schools, a charter campus, one elementary school and five high schools. Two local colleges, Point Loma Nazarene University and a satellite campus of San Diego Community College, provide post-secondary options.
The peninsula offers great dining, art, and shopping, a variety of accommodations and exciting activities, and stunning views of San Diego’s skyline. This unbeatable combination makes Point Loma an ideal place to visit—or to settle down with your family.
