General Description

A very huge land

El Cajon is the largest city within San Diego’s East County region with a population of about 100,000. You can find this community just off Interstate 8, which is about 15 miles east of downtown San Diego. El Cajon gets its name from the Spanish for “the box”—chosen because it’s tucked into a valley between several mountains.

In 1845, Maria Antonia Estudillo received a Mexican land grant to settle the area, known then as Rancho El Cajon. The city was incorporated in 1912.  Today, based on the US Census Bureau, the total area of the city is 14.4 square miles (all land). It’s bordered by Spring Valley on the south, an unincorporated San Diego County on the east, La Mesa and San Diego on the west and Santee on the north.

The climate in El Cajon is warm during summer and cool in winter, with a mean temperature of 55.4 °F or more. Other than the gorgeous weather, what’s life like in El Cajon? There are several activities for residents in the city. In fact, over the past ten years, the community has experienced a significant revitalization in a bid to enhance its appeal and attract more businesses to the town.

Among the top employers in the city of El Cajon are:

  • Cajon Valley Union School District
  • City of El Cajon
  • GKN Aerospace Chem-tronics
  • Taylor Guitars
  • Grossmont Union High School District
  • University Mechanical &Engineering Contractors
  • Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District
  • The Home Deport
  • Walmart

The city is a short drive to downtown San Diego and offers a fantastic combination of historic and modern architecture. You will find several art galleries as well as restaurants and shopping centers there. Fondly regarded as “East County’s Cultural Zone,” there are designated arts districts in El Cajon, including the Art Center and Olaf Wieghorst Museum.

More Features

Also, there are several events on the Promenade to ensure that the downtown areas remain popular. Some of these activities include concerts which take place every Friday between May and September and other weekly events which are linked to the Cajon Classic Cruise – an event that also takes place every Wednesday.

There are more than a dozen elementary schools, six high schools, and six middle schools. The three higher education institutions in the community are:

  • The San Diego Christian College
  • Grossmont College
  • Cuyamaca College

Other attractions you can find within and nearby the city of El Cajon include Steele Canyon County Park, the Grossmont Shopping Center, and the Rancho San Diego Golf Course, as well as the Mission Trails Regional Park. El Cajon truly has it all: in the city, you will find a total of 17 parks, two libraries, 65 churches, seven community recreation centers and a state-of-the-art performing arts center.

El Cajon is also home to the famous Mother Goose Parade, which takes place every year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. It’s the largest parade in San Diego County and one of the largest in the country as a whole. For individuals seeking a calmer alternative to the downtown bustle of San Diego—without sacrificing amenities and conveniences—El Cajon remains an ideal spot.
