General Description
A very huge land
El Cajon is the largest city within San Diego’s East County region with a population of about 100,000. You can find this community just off Interstate 8, which is about 15 miles east of downtown San Diego. El Cajon gets its name from the Spanish for “the box”—chosen because it’s tucked into a valley between several mountains.
In 1845, Maria Antonia Estudillo received a Mexican land grant to settle the area, known then as Rancho El Cajon. The city was incorporated in 1912. Today, based on the US Census Bureau, the total area of the city is 14.4 square miles (all land). It’s bordered by Spring Valley on the south, an unincorporated San Diego County on the east, La Mesa and San Diego on the west and Santee on the north.
The climate in El Cajon is warm during summer and cool in winter, with a mean temperature of 55.4 °F or more. Other than the gorgeous weather, what’s life like in El Cajon?
